Paul Gauguin Essay Topics - Writing TipsIn a recent interview, Paul Gauguin, who designed some of the most beautiful buildings in Europe, spoke about the advantages of poetry in building and design. The following are some of his ideas.
'Let's start with project management, and the skills that come with it. The quality of the work it produces is very important to me. Not that one can make art without skills, but I have great difficulty taking on a new concept, and seeing if it will work. The project itself takes over and the input of the designer has to be limited to the good management system that he can put in place. The project manager is the point person for controlling the whole project from beginning to end, which makes the designer the staff officer, just as the civil engineer is the staff officer of the civil engineer. Paul Gauguin also said that the variety of tools available today is very different from what he used to use. In his day, he would use wooden or metal boxes to build a structure. Today's materials tend to be built out of wire and wood, with plywood, and copper piping or nails in the joints, which makes it extremely difficult to build with. Materials also vary greatly in terms of strength and durability. As far as being a project manager, the designer must be very detail oriented. Project managers on the other hand, normally are detail oriented and take care of all details involved in the project. When a project goes over budget or behind schedule, project managers find out how important the basics of their job are, and it's usually at this time that they go back to the basics and begin to work with more detail oriented materials. Paul Gauguin's favorite painting by Claude Monet was Trianon, and there is a Trianon painting in every room in my house. I cannot understand why the first thing to use a flat paint on is the bed, but I guess he liked the old oil paints better than the newer enamel and urethane paints. I also don't think he would have chosen enamel or urethane, because they do not bond well with the wallpaper. Another interesting idea that Paul Gauguin shared with me was that too much light does not aid in lighting a room properly. He did not mean a glare coming from a window, but the illumination in general, which is often too bright in a large room. If you were designing a room like that, he said that you could diffuse the light and give more emphasis to certain areas of the room. In conclusion, Paul Gauguin is an incredibly creative, imaginative and visionary artist, and I think I would have done very well studying under him. I think the world would be a much better place if we followed his advice and utilized his innovative ways of thinking.
